Digital Learning Centre

Angaza Digital Learning

In Kenya, youth from informal settlement has little or no access to information denying them the very critical opportunity that such information would play in addressing their challenges. In a study conducted by Angaza in 2013, youth from informal settlements expressed their desire to access information and to learn how to use computers as one of their urgent needs. Angaza created this opportunity for youth in an effort to improve their lives and to contribute directly to Millennium Development Goals MDG’s. The learning centre will act as a one-stop information centre for the youth in Thika informal settlements.

Aims of the Centre

The overall aim is to increase access of information to young people living in informal settlements related to reduced poverty and social vulnerabilities as well as to expand opportunities for youth in Thika.

The centre will focus on the following areas;

Exchange program

The digital centre will create a platform for Angaza youth and those from other organizations or schools to share information and more importantly learn from each other. This will be done by linking the youth together and have mentors who are their teachers and leaders in their school/organizations or in the communities to support them.

Skills development

The centre will play a big role in developing the skills of the youth in various ways ranging from basic computer skills, life skills interaction forums etc. This will fill a big gap in the community where the youth and children lack access to information technology.

The digital Centre will also act as a community library where the youth can access information related to their education, the youth will also be able to undertake research in the library as well.

Photography, animation and filming

We envisage also that the youth will be trained in photography, animation and filming in future so that they can be able to tell their stories and also tell stories about their communities and country through photos, animations and short films. This will also add value to the exchange program with other youth in Sweden and other parts of the world by exchanging information about photos, animations or short films.

Community e-library

The digital Centre will also act as a community library where the youth can access information related to their education, the youth will also be able to undertake research in the library as well.
